Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vivah Muhurat?
Vivah Muhurat is the auspicious time chosen for a Hindu wedding ceremony based on Vedic astrology. It considers the rising Lagna (ascendant), planetary Hora, Choghadiya, tithi, nakshatra, and yoga to find the most blessed moment for the Hastmelap (joining of hands) and Phere (sacred rounds around the fire). A well-chosen muhurat is believed to ensure marital harmony, prosperity, and longevity of the bond.
How is the Hastmelap time calculated?
The Hastmelap time is determined by analyzing the Lagna (ascendant sign rising on the eastern horizon), the planetary Hora ruling that moment, and the Choghadiya period. Sthir (Fixed) Lagnas like Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, and Kumbha are most preferred for marriage as they signify stability. The time is also checked against Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, and other inauspicious periods to ensure a clean window.
What are Sthir, Dual, and Chara Lagnas?
In Vedic astrology, the 12 zodiac signs are classified into three types based on their nature. Sthir (Fixed) Lagnas — Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha — are most preferred for marriage as they indicate stability and endurance. Dual (Ubhaya) Lagnas — Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanu, Meena — are moderately good, bringing adaptability. Chara (Moveable) Lagnas — Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara — are generally less preferred as they may indicate changeability.
What if no muhurat is available on my date?
Not every day has a suitable vivah muhurat. During Chaturmas (July–October), on Amavasya or certain inauspicious tithis, or when planetary combinations are unfavorable, no safe Hastmelap window may exist. In such cases, try selecting nearby dates. You can also use the date-range search (coming soon) to find the best dates in a month.
Should I also check birth charts (Kundli) for marriage?
Yes. Vivah Muhurat determines the best timing for the ceremony, while Kundli Matching (Ashtakoota) assesses the compatibility between the bride and groom based on their birth charts. Both are important. You can check compatibility on our Kundli Matching page.
