Question 1

What is Holika Dahan?

Accepted Answer

Holika Dahan is the fire ritual on the eve of Holi, observed at pradosh kala on Phalguna Purnima. It commemorates the burning of Holika — the demoness who tried to kill Prahlad — and Prahlad's survival through Vishnu's grace.

Question 2

What is the correct timing for Holika Dahan?

Accepted Answer

Pradosh kala — after sunset while the Purnima tithi is active. If Bhadra (Vishti karana) overlaps with pradosh, the Dahan must wait until Bhadra ends. The exact muhurat varies by city each year.

Question 3

What is Bhadra and why does it matter for Holika Dahan?

Accepted Answer

Bhadra is the Vishti karana — considered inauspicious for all auspicious rituals. Lighting the bonfire during Bhadra is explicitly prohibited. Check your local panchang for whether Bhadra falls at pradosh time.

Question 4

What should be offered in the Holika Dahan fire?

Accepted Answer

Coconut, sesame seeds (til), new grain from the season, and cow dung cakes are traditional. The coconut placed in the fire represents ego being offered to the Divine.
