Question 1

Should I observe both Padmini and Parama Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

The traditional ideal is to observe both — Padmini in the Shukla Paksha and Parama in the Krishna Paksha of Adhika Masa. Together they form the complete Adhika Masa Ekadashi observance. However, if only one can be observed, either carries the full merit of Purushottam Masa. The tradition does not rank one above the other.

Question 2

What makes Parama different from Padmini?

Accepted Answer

Both are Adhika Masa Ekadashis with similar spiritual power. The difference is in quality: Padmini falls in Shukla Paksha (waxing moon, associated with growth and brightness) while Parama falls in Krishna Paksha (waning moon, associated with introspection, dissolution, and inward focus). Parama is better suited for deep contemplation, clearing old patterns, and inner cleansing.

Question 3

How often does Parama Ekadashi occur?

Accepted Answer

Approximately every 32-33 months, when the lunar calendar adds an Adhika (intercalary) month. This means Parama Ekadashi occurs roughly once in about three years. Its rarity is part of its significance — the tradition specifically urges observers not to miss it when it does occur.

Question 4

What is the significance of the name Parama?

Accepted Answer

Parama means 'the supreme' or 'the highest.' This is a direct reference to Purushottam (the Supreme Being), under whose protection Adhika Masa falls. The name signals that despite occurring in an 'extra' month, this Ekadashi is of the highest spiritual order.
