Question 1

Can I drink water during Nirjala Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

This is the most commonly asked question. The traditional answer is no — that is what 'Nirjala' means. However, the Padma Purana itself permits Achamana, which is a small sip of water taken for purification before worship. This is not a loophole — it is a shastriya provision. If you are genuinely unable to go without water due to health, medication, or age, then phalahar (fruits with milk or water) is acceptable. Elders always said — a vrat that damages your health serves no one.

Question 2

I missed other Ekadashis this year. Can Nirjala make up for all of them?

Accepted Answer

This is what the tradition says, and it comes directly from Vyasa's instruction to Bhima. But it should be understood properly — it was said for someone like Bhima who genuinely could not fast due to his constitution, not for someone who skips Ekadashis out of convenience and then tries to cover it all in one day. The merit depends on sincerity, not just endurance.

Question 3

When exactly should I break the Nirjala fast?

Accepted Answer

The fast must be broken during the Parana window on Dwadashi morning — after sunrise and before the Dwadashi tithi ends. Missing this window is considered a dosha (defect) in the vrat. The exact time changes every year and depends on your city. Check the Parana day shown on this page for your location; the exact time is coming soon.

Question 4

Is Nirjala Ekadashi the same as Bhima Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The names Bhima Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi, and Pandava Ekadashi all refer to the same day. The connection comes from the Padma Purana, where Maharishi Vyasa specifically designed this vrat for Bhima, who could not control his appetite enough to observe regular Ekadashi fasts.

Question 5

What should I donate on Nirjala Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

Jal daan is specifically prescribed for this Ekadashi — donating water pots, water vessels, fans (pankha), fruits, and food on Dwadashi morning. In earlier times, this was done at temples or to Brahmins. Today, giving water and food to anyone in need fulfills the same spirit. The emphasis is on sharing, especially water, because the observer has experienced its absence.

Question 6

What if I am taking medication that requires food or water?

Accepted Answer

Do not skip medication for the vrat. Health comes first — this is not a modern concession but a shastriya principle. Take your medication with the minimum necessary water. If your condition requires food, observe phalahar. A vrat that endangers health serves neither the body nor the soul. Consult your doctor and adjust the observance accordingly.
