Question 1

Why is this called the 'awakening' of Vishnu?

Accepted Answer

It is symbolic. After four months of Chaturmas — during which Vishnu is said to be in Yoga Nidra — this Ekadashi marks the resumption of His active presence. In practice, it means the season of restraint ends and the season of auspicious activity begins.

Question 2

What is Tulsi Vivah and why is it done on this day?

Accepted Answer

Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant with Shaligram (representing Vishnu). It is performed on this day because it is the first auspicious day after Chaturmas. In many families, it marks the beginning of the wedding season. The ceremony is simple — decorate Tulsi, place Shaligram beside it, and perform the vivah rituals.

Question 3

Can marriages happen before Devutthana Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

Traditionally, no. The period from Devshayani to Devutthana is Chaturmas, during which auspicious samskaras like marriage are paused. The wedding season formally reopens after this Ekadashi. However, this is a guideline, not an absolute prohibition — individual circumstances and regional customs vary.

Question 4

I did not observe Chaturmas. Should I still observe this Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every Ekadashi has independent merit. But the full significance of Devutthana is understood in context — it is the culmination of four months of discipline. Even if you did not observe full Chaturmas, observing this Ekadashi is still valuable.
