Question 1

Why is the Amla tree sacred?

Accepted Answer

According to the Padma Purana, the Amla tree grew from the tears of Lord Vishnu shed during deep meditation. This makes it not just a sacred tree but a living form of Vishnu's grace. It is called 'Dhatri' (the sustainer) because it carries the divine essence. Worshipping the tree on Amalaki Ekadashi is therefore considered a direct form of Vishnu worship.

Question 2

What if I don't have access to an Amla tree?

Accepted Answer

If no Amla tree is accessible, keep Amla fruit on your puja thali and perform worship with it alongside the standard tulsi, flowers, and chandan. The fruit carries the same significance as the tree. Many families in urban areas observe Amalaki Ekadashi this way. The sincerity of the worship matters more than the setting.

Question 3

Is there a health connection to Amalaki Ekadashi?

Accepted Answer

The Amla fruit is Ayurveda's supreme rasayana (rejuvenator) — the richest natural source of Vitamin C, balancing all three doshas. The tradition connecting this health-giving fruit with spiritual renewal is not coincidental. It reflects the Hindu view that body and spirit are interconnected, and that what nourishes one nourishes the other. Including Amla in your diet around this Ekadashi benefits both dimensions.
